Supporting Isle of Wight disabled children and their families

Ethan’s Story

A family story about friendship, trusted care and the value of respite.

Ethan's Story

Ethan's family describe him as their pride and joy. His existing story explains that he has Angelman syndrome, epilepsy and significant communication and care needs, but also a huge personality and a love of being around people.

For Ethan, Beaulieu House became somewhere he could spend time with carers and nurses who understood his needs, enjoy activities, use the sensory room and playground, and spend time with other children and young people.

Respite is not simply care away from home — for a young person it can also mean friendships, independence and having activities of their own.

Respite for the whole family

Ethan's story also explains the impact on his mother and siblings. Overnight stays could give the rest of the family time for ordinary activities, study, sleep and time together that can otherwise be difficult to arrange around continuous care.
