Joe's Story… by Joe's Mum
Joe's family were initially unsure about somebody else caring for him. That changed when they saw children socialising together at Beaulieu House and understood that respite could be a positive experience for Joe in his own right.
Tea visits and sleepovers
Joe started with regular tea visits and later moved on to overnight stays. His mum describes these as genuine sleepovers: time for Joe to see friends, enjoy activities and trips, and have individual attention in a setting where nursing support was available when he needed it.
The benefit worked both ways: Joe gained social time and independence, while his parents and sister had valuable opportunities to spend time together and recharge.
Turning 18 and moving on
As Joe approached adulthood, the family faced uncertainty about what would happen next. The existing story credits Beaulieu House with helping support the transition and extending support while the family found an appropriate adult respite arrangement.
